Faith Hill Fireflies Country Music CD Review

October 30, 2008 · Posted in Music CD · Comment

Country music super star Faith Hill has released her first CD in more than three years on the Warner Bros label entitled Fireflies.

This is her sixth release with each of the previous five being multi-platinum efforts, and nine country music #1’s under her belt. Oh and don’t forget about her being a multi Grammy Award Winner.

With a resume like the one just described Hill is clearly one of the biggest, and brightest stars in all of music. Not just country music.

Fireflies is somewhat of a return effort for Hill as she gets back to her country roots after experimenting outside the boundaries of country music on her last outing, Breathe.

I like Fireflies because of it’s high production value, and the focus of the collection is once again on Faith’s incredible singing voice.

The CD launches with a very vibrant tune in Sunshine & Summertime and from there proceeds to remind us that when Hill is in top form, as she is here, the quality of her voice is second to none.

Overall Fireflies is very easy to listen to and is what I call, must have music. I give it two thumbs up. Even the casual music fan will appreciate and enjoy Hills incredible vocal presentations provided here.

The standout tunes on Fireflies are Sunshine & Summertime [track 1], Like We Never Loved At All [track 7], and Paris [track 14]. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 5, Stealing Kisses. Very nice!

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD

October 28, 2008 · Posted in DVD · Comment

You’ve heard the story before. Technology pushes onward and a new media replaces an aging stalwart. In the 1980s, it was Betamax vs. VHS tape. Today, it is Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

The traditional DVD is on its way out. There’s little disagreement about that. The DVD player’s red laser is losing its appeal and the new blue laser of upstart competitors is gaining more attention. Alternatives boast considerably more storage space and flexibilitynecessities as the HDTV era establishes itself and consumers’ tastes for products loaded with extras grows. The only question is who comes next. There are two primary contenders, Blu-ray and HD DVD, but no clear winner.

HD DVD disks will hold 15 GB of data on a single layer, 30 GB with dual layering. Tests substantiate a 45 GB capacity with a theoretical limit of 60 GB. That 15/30/45/60 line looks good compared to today’s DVD. However, when one compares it to Blu-ray capabilities at 25/50/100/200, it seems unthinkable that HD DVD could grab a market share advantage.

HD DVD, however, has a few advantages. First, it’s cheaper to make. Compared to Blu-ray, factory retooling is a breeze. Second, it’s probably sturdier. Bother options have thinner protective layers than the DVD, but one may be able to pierce the Blu-ray’s protective shield too easily. Third, HD DVD is closer to being ready for mass production and distribution.

Major players have lined up behind both options. Hopes for cooperative abandonment of the competing options for a standardized format have dissipated. One of the two options will probably emerge as the “next big thing.” That outcome could be determined by storage capabilities, market penetration, consumer preference or durability. It might also be decided by who can first develop an optimal security system to appease studios and content producers concerned about piracy.

VHS trumped the ostensibly superior Betamax back in the days when videotape was cutting-edge. Soon we’ll learn whether consumers are ready to embrace the massive storage advantage of Blu-ray or the “it was here first” appeal of HD DVD.

Rosanne Cash Black Cadillac Country Music CD Review

October 26, 2008 · Posted in Music CD · Comment

Country music sensation Rosanne Cash has released her latest CD Black Cadillac.

On Black Cadillac Cash whispers, and rocks sings and shares herself beautifully as her overwhelming talent shines through making this lyrically focused song writing at it’s best. This is clearly a real heartfelt project and just listening to the tracks you can hear Rosanne pouring herself into each song. The emotion of each tune readily evident.

I found her songwriting to be quite thought provoking.

This outstanding CD launches with the title track, Black Cadillac which has a very unusual bass line and is on it’s own worth the price of admission.

If you are already a fan of Rosanne Cash, or if you are simply a lover of powerful, confessional songwriting, this CD will not disappoint. It’s great work.

Overall Black Cadillac is an outstanding release. The songs are beautiful, and the production is great. Certainly a must have CD for any collection. I give it two thumbs up.

While this entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are I Was Watching You [track 3], The World Unseen [track 7], and Good Intent [track 12]. My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 9, Dreams Are Not My Home. Very nice!
