Law & Order (Season 3) DVD Review

February 29, 2008 · Posted in DVD · Comment

Nominated for 52 Emmys since its 1990 premiere, including 11 for Outstanding Drama Series, Law & Order is one of the most popular television shows in modern day history. With an additional 4 Golden Globe nominations for Best TV Series (Drama), Law & Order is more than a TV show, it’s a lucrative franchise for host network NBC, spawning popular spin-offs Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001), and (the now cancelled) Law & Order: Trial By Jury (2005). Filmed on location in New York City, the show is the brainchild of creator Dick Wolf, a longtime writer for successful TV series such as Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice. With sixteen successful seasons already on the books, and more on the way, Law & Order remains one of the best drama series available on any network

Law & Order centers around the New York City criminal justice system, where “the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups – the police who investigate crime, and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders”. The first half of each one-hour episode is dedicated to the initial revelation of a crime and the police investigation that subsequently takes place. This usually involves interviewing witnesses, following leads, testing evidence, and/or hammering out a confession. Once sufficient evidence has been gathered to charge a suspect, the remainder of the show revolves around the district attorney’s office and their attempts to prosecute the offenders. Oftentimes, the audience will be witness to unexpected plot twists, unorthodox media-driven cases, or last minute, Perry Mason-like confessions or brokered deals. Given its long TV run, the cast of Law & Order has frequently changed over the years – with only a handful of characters experiencing lengthy runs, characters such as Det. Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach), Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), and EADA John “Jack” McCoy (Sam Waterston)

The Law & Order (Season 3) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “Skin Deep” in which the murder of a sleazy photographer is the main subject of investigation. But as the investigation proceeds, it seems more and more likely that the prime suspects are the models he often photographed Other notable episodes from Season 3 include “Self Defense” in which the prosecution is divided when a store owner shoots two robbers and claims self-defense as justification, and “Conduct Unbecoming” in which the NYPD is forced to investigate on the closed turf of the Navy in order to solve the death of a female Naval officer during a party at a Manhattan hotel

5 Minute CD – Break Your Myth About Relaxing Quickly!

February 27, 2008 · Posted in Compact Disc · Comment

A 5 minute CD can provide you with a break and act as a drive-through
solution when you are stressed out. This break can give you more time
to enjoy with your family.

Then you may wonder if there is a 5 minute CD that can help you take a
quick break and enjoy more time with your family how come you are not
using it?

Let me explain.

Working as a volunteer, I teach relaxation, by the bedside, for heart,
stroke and cancer patients in hospitals. I have noticed that there is a
myth about taking a break.

The myth about taking a break is the belief that keeping yourself busy
is a form of therapy for dealing with stress.

A 40 -year- old stroke patient discovered that being busy prevented her
from getting in touch with her true feelings. It took the experience of
a stroke to convince her that there is no need for or benefit from
always being busy.

The 5 minute CD also encourages you to stop, for a moment, in the midst
of chaos and gives you an answer to your problem. This answer will now
allow you to take a break and start dealing with the feeling of being
overwhelmed.

Answers to a problem:

Most of the time your problems become evident to you because of your
feelings. These are the same feelings that you have been taught
traditionally that you have to get rid of because they make you
uncomfortable. In your ignorance, you blindly accepted the idea of
suppressing your feelings by popping a pill, having a drink or a smoke.

The 5 minute CD, by giving you answers to a problem, is as good as
popping a pill, having a drink or smoke and allows you to be more aware
of you feelings because you are no longer suppressing them. Now you can
have more time to enjoy with your family.

Feeling overwhelmed:

Feeling overwhelmed comes about through an accumulation of feelings
that you have suppressed over the years because of the myth that
keeping yourself busy and not taking a break is a form of therapy for
dealing with stress. The 5 minute CD gives you the answer to a problem
while allowing you to take a quick relaxation break. This results in
you having more time to enjoy with your family.

In conclusion:

The 5 minute CD although an effective relaxation resource has been
ignored because of the myth that keeping yourself busy rather than
taking a break is a form of therapy for dealing with stress.

If you choose to change your perspective and embrace your feelings, so
that you can take a break and get answers to a problem, then the 5
minute CD will let you notice how it feels to take a quick break and
listen to the joy of life as you spend more time with your family.

Maximize CD Rates During a Flat and Inverted Yield Curve

February 25, 2008 · Posted in Compact Disc · Comment

If you want an investment that maintains your principal, Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are a great way to go. As with most investments, we all hope to time the market at its highest, but without a crystal ball that proves to be difficult. The best advice is to create a ladder and then maintain that ladder.

The temptation in a flat or inverted yield curve environment is to go short. However, this can be disastrous if rates drop considerably. For instance, if you invest all of your funds in 6-month CDs because short-term rates are projected to rise your entire portfolio may be in for a surprise if the commentators are wrong.

Let’s first assume they are right. By March, Fed Funds will be 4.75% and by May 5.00%. You can purchase a 6-Month CD today with a rate of 4.95%. If rates hold after May, when the CD matures in August you may be able to earn 5.20%. This could be higher if inflation starts to be a worry and more increases come. When August comes around, you are celebrating because your portfolio will re-price with higher CD rates.

Okay, now if they are wrong and the economy takes a down turn. Rates rise in March, but they hold in May. By the time August comes around, the FOMC needs to lower rates to spur the economy once again. As a result your portfolio re-prices lower.

However, there is any easy solution to this dilemma. Build a laddered portfolio! Generally, CD investors are paid a premium for opening longer-term accounts. With a normal sloped curve, longer-term CDs (5-Year to 10-Year) generally pay 50 Basis Points to 150 Basis Points (0.5% to 1.5%) more than shorter term CDs (6-Month to 1-Year). For a $100,000 investment, this is $500 to $1500 more a year. For $1MM, this is $5,000 to $15,000 more. And taking this out for five years, that could be $75,000 more in your pocket.

Now is a perfect time to build your ladder. You can be somewhat confident that in the short-term rates will rise and you will probably be able to take advantage of some higher rates. The added bonus is that you know a 5% return over any length of time is a good return and investing long term protects against the ups and downs that are coming.
